Why choose organic?

February 7, 2016

Organic food is (unfortunatelly) still more expensive than non-organic food, however there is a number of reasons why buying organic produce really is a better option for you. The more you know about organic food and organic farming the more you see this as investing in your own health ( and the enviroment).

  1. Organic produce taste better!
  2. Organic produce has higher nutrients level. For many years, some so called ” food and diet experts” claimed there was no proof of any nutritional superiority over conventional foods. Critics of organic foods consistently pointed out that, for every study claiming increased nutritional value of organic foods, there was another one to prove conventional foods were the same if not better! Recently, however, the scales were finally tipped in favor of organic foods with the completion of a large 4-year study done by Newcastle University in England. They proved what advocates of organics have intuitively always known: organically grown food HAS increased nutrient levels. The results are significant because nutrient content was increased by 20-40% in the foods studied.
  3. Organic produce is free from antibiotics, hormones, anti-microbials and other growth promotants.
  4. Organic produce is grown in the healthiest, oldest known to man way of farming: hand weeding, crop rotation, use of green manure and mulching, careful, healthy, resistant crop choice, good cutivation practice and use of natural predators that eat pest.
  5. Organic produce is grown without the use of artificial fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides.  Over 400 chemical pesticides are routinely used in conventional farming and conventionally grown produce have pesticides, herbisides and other chemical residues.  Research has shown that 30 percent of insecticides, 60 percent of herbicides and 90 percent of fungicides are known to cause cancer. These chemicals can also lead to nervous and endocrine problems.
  6. Organic food has lower nitrates levels.  Due to extensive use of artificial fertilizers conventional food can have high levels of nitrates.  High nitrate levels in food and drinking water are converted to carcinogenic nitrosamines. Nitrates have been shown to impair the ability of the blood to carry oxygen.
  7. Organic produce helps to protect the health of the future generations.  The good food choices that we make now will protect our children’s health.  Pesticides have been shown to cross the placenta during pregnancy, and a recent study by scientists at the Columbia Center for Children’s Environmental Health in New York found a link between pesticide use and impaired fetal growth. Another study, from the University of Washington in Seattle, found that preschoolers fed conventional diets had six times the level of certain pesticides in their urine as those who ate organic foods. Little bodies are yet not efficient in detoxing the toxic chemicals therefore they are more susceptible to accumulating and storing the toxins in their bodies.
  8. Organic farming builds healthy soils.  Healthy soil means healthy produce.
  9. Organic farming protects our waters. Pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals polute our rivers and ground waters. That’s the water we drink!
  10. Certified organic produce is GM/GE free.
